"Yisrael (Jacob) loved Yosef (Joseph) more than all of his other sons, for he was born in his old age, and he created for him a long and colorful tunic "
(Bereshet 37:3)

Yosef was Yisrael's favorite son, and the first son born to his most beloved wife, Rachel. Because of his spiritual and intellectual gifts, Yosef was elevated within his family. The long-sleeved, embroidered garment made of colorful strips of fine wool was tailored for him as a symbol of his new status.
