"Valor of a Woman" is from the passage in Proverbs,
written by Shlomo HaMelech (King Solomon), which is read on every Shabbat by a husband to his wife.
The first three lines found in the painting read:
"An accomplished woman, who can find? Far beyond pearls is her value. Her husband's heart relies on her,
and he shall lack no fortune. She bestows goodness upon him, never evil, all the days of his life."
More than simply "valor" is implied by this Proverb; it is a testament to a woman who possesses the
attributes she needs to carry out any task that is before her with virtue. It is also a metaphor for
the Shechinah (Divine Presence), that is with us on Shabbat.
Surrounding the Proverb in the painting are the names of the four matriarchs in Jewish history: Sarah,
Rivka, Leah, Rachel, the prophetess, Miriam, and the great-grandmother of King David, Ruth.
