"Hear O'Israel, the Lord
is our G-d, the Lord is One." (Devarim 6:4)
The "Shema" is the single most well-known and important prayers in
all of Judaism, first spoken by Moses in his final address to the nation of
Israel. It said every morning and evening during the week, and recited on every
Sabbath and festival. Inside every mezuzah, a container mounted on every doorpost
in a Jewish home, is a handwritten scroll of the "Shema."
The sentence itself declares that the Lord is one, and only one; a whole
and perfect being. He is also the G-d of the Jewish people, who led them out
of slavery in Egypt to be their G-d.
