The letter "nun" is the fourteenth letter in the Hebrew alphabet, and is omitted from Psalm 145, a Psalm written in alphabetical order. This is because nun begins the word "nefilla" or "falling," a negative trait of those who fall away from G-d's Torah teachings and mitzvot. The "Nefillim" were the "giants" spoken of in Bereshet/Genesis and in Bamidbar/Numbers, who "fell" from the sky. They and their offspring, the Refaim and Anakim, were enemies of the Jews (King Og of Bashan, Goliath, etc.) until Joshua led the nation into Israel to finally wipe them out.

The numerical value of nun is 50, a positive number in that every 50 years is the Jubilee celebration in Israel. Also, Jews are commanded to count the "Omer" every day for 50 days between Pesach and Shavuot. Nun also begins the word "ner" (light) and "neshamah" (soul), uniting the two. "The soul of man is the candle of G-d" the Talmud teaches.
