“He encountered the place and spent the night there because the sun had set; he took from the stones of the place which he arranged around his head, and lay down in that place. And he dreamt and behold! A ladder was set earthward and its top reached heavenward; and behold! Angels of G-d were scending and descending on it.” Bereshet/Genesis 28:11-12

The third patriarch and father to the twelve tribes of Israel had a spectacular vision while asleep on mount moriah. the Vayikra Rabbah (29:2) interprets that guardian angels of the four Kingdoms were moving up and down a heavenly ladder, representing their growing and diminishing powers on earth.
