The Hebrew word "Chai" means "Life." It is the combination of two letters, chet and yud. The numerical value of the two letters is "18," a number that has great positive significance among the Jewish people, for life is G-d's single greatest gift to us. Charity is often given in multiples of 18, symbolizing a form of "giving of life" by the donor to the recipient(s).
